I don't think there's any part of this I'm not in love with! The embrace of the process. The out loud learning. The craft of progression. And all the gorgeous artwork. Every bit of this excellent!
Mark Luetke! I have no idea how to pronounce your name, but I am thrilled to see the ven diagram of fellow comic artist and Wheezywaiter fan overlap! 😁
Haha, yeah, love that guy. He’s gotta get a clone working on that tuesbetter newsletter. With so much going on he’s been having trouble keeping up 🧔♂️
Thanks Joshua, I’ve been aware of Farel for quite a long time too but I sort of fell out of the scene a decade or so ago and stopped following his work. It’s wonderful to see he’s been steadily pumping out amazing pages that whole time. His narrated process vids on YouTube are fantastic.
Read through your posts on machine intelligence and supply chains - I'm looking forward to more of it!
From your backstory bit it looks like perhaps you've known Farel personally for a long time? I've never met him but I remember his name coming up quite a bit during a 24 hour comic session I did with a group of friends at Gallery5 in Richmond, Virginia. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some 2nd or 3rd degree connections. Not that that really means anything. Link to comic if you're interested: https://dophs.substack.com/p/robert
I've worked as a designer/engineer for or adjacent to AI/ML/Data driven companies for most of my career. I appreciate your realistic and sober approach to the subject. It's pretty easy to get caught up in the buzzwords and lose your grip on reality in that domain. At this point I feel a bit jaded in regards to the whole thing - it's definitely a fantastic tool that can help in many areas but it's not the magic bullet some of the sales folk I've worked with want it to be.
Yes, been friends with Farel for a long time, we have a mutual very close friend who went to school with Farel at SVA and our other friend Zachary Baldus who does comics as well. Would not doubt a degree or two of separation. I used to come through Richmond on tour quite a bit in the 90s and played with the Young Pioneers, Men's Recovery Project, and other assorted weirdos.
Thanks for the encouragement on my posts. Been rethinking how I want to share my insights, and having been on Substack for another year now I think I have a better idea about how to do it.
Thanks Martin, and welcome! The cartooning book I got the reductive idea from is full of great exercises- hoping to do more “homework” this week and see what comes out of it.

Thanks Duane! Always enjoy talking shop.

Back to basics is a good strategy. Great to see the Farel shout out, I've known him for a long time and he has a cool style.

I hope you get better about accepting your success because it’s coming.
Thanks Stanley, doing my best over here 😬
Blimey, this is so good, and I love the reductive idea. I literally subbed to this publication a couple of hours ago, and already gold. Yay!
